What’s in Our Bag? 70-200mm

April 22, 2013

Happy Happy Monday, friends. Today we are going to be chatting about a lens that is essential to any Wedding Photographer’s bag: the 70-200mm.We are starting the series with the 50mm and the 70-200mm because, if you’re about to get into shooting Weddings and you only have enough in the ole’ bank account for two lenses, these are the puppies that every event photographer needs. If your kit consisted of these two lenses, you could pretty much do everything that you needed to do.

There are basically two main scenarios that we find ourselves rocking this bohemith: during a ceremony and during dances and toasts at the reception. That’s how we utilize the 70-200mm 95% of the time. It allows us to really hone in on emotion and capture moments while being totally inconspicuous; which is exactly what we want. Because the day isn’t about us. It’s about cake. Just kidding. It’s about love. But I do have a lot of love for cake.

All of that being said, there is a 5% chunk of time where we use the 70-200 for things like details and portraits; and it’s pretty awesome at those things, too.

It’s a super versatile lens, and when you’re shooting Weddings versatility is clutch. Like Kobe Bryant in the 7th inning (check out my inappropriate use of sports metaphors. don’t judge me.)
