Peachy Keen: Sara in Guatemala

April 11, 2014

For the past 10 days I (Sara) have been in Guatemala City, Guatemala for the I am Art Workshop.  This was my second trip to Guatemala with Athentikos.  We had the amazing privilege of working with the kids of La Limonada, the largest slum in central america, on a mural just outside of their community. The mural was designed to tell the 10 basic rights of a child: name, nationality, protection, love, education, recreation, food, housing, medical attention and family. They are also learning  that God “has wonderfully made” each of us for a unique purpose! It is exciting to see how art can be used as a spiritual and therapy tool.

A year a half ago, we took 100 of the kids to Art Camp at the coast… you can read about that trip here: http://saradharper.net/?p=3443

We are hoping to do this again.. details coming soon on how you can help make that happen..

A view of La Limonada..

Prayer before starting to prepare the wall for the children to paint!

This little cutie showed up to help us the day before workshop!

All of the kids and adults who worked on the mural added their handprint!

My friend Amelia visiting the boy her family sponsors through Limonade International.  To learn more about sponsorship.. visit their page.

The finished product!!  Love it!  All of the children walk past it several times a day as they go to school.  So many families and adults stopped by as we were painting and said how much they loved it and hoped it brings change to their community!

My favorite part.. Made by the children of La Limonada!

We had a few other side workshops going on around the church and near by park.  Here they are painting a big plank sculpture that went in all of the schools with the rights on them.

Sidewalk chalk…
