I have a horrible memory – but I still remember, clear as day, the first time I saw him. He was huddled around a campfire, hanging out with his friends. He had blond hair back then, parted down the middle – cut in a bowl shape. And I was instantly smitten. By the time the campfire had died down, and it was time to head back to our cabins, we were walking hand in hand.
I have a horrible memory, but I still remember my sweaty palms, and thoughts of a lifelong love.
That was thirteen years ago. You asked me to Prom. You walked in line with me as we graduated High School. I cheered you on as you graduated from College – and you returned the favor. We danced our first dance as Husband and Wife. We became parents for the first time; both of us scared to death and incredibly excited. You studied with me, night and day, as I prepared for my Masters Comps. We moved: across the country… and then back across the country… and then down to Atlanta. We built a business. We built a dream. We laughed with our whole hearts and cried desperately into each others’ arms. We’ve made huge mistakes… and with them have come huge successes. Our dream… that tiny seed that was first planted all those years ago – perhaps that very night by the campfire… has grown. Now, we are living in the gorgeous shade of this dream that we’ve nurtured; that we knew would survive even when no one else did. And I love it here.
You, my lifelong love, have made my dreams come true. I am truly the luckiest girl in the world to have you as a best friend. Happy Birthday.
Let’s party hardy!
