We’re All Just Walking Each Other Home

September 18, 2015

I’ve been thinking a lot over the past few weeks about community. About friendship. About what it looks like to do life fully invested in other people.

And what it looks like is messy, honest, transparent. It looks like giving time that you don’t have; giving resources that you feel short on. It looks like being selfless; like putting others’ needs before your own. It looks like listening when you want to speak – being quiet when you want to be loud – caring when you want to quit.

In truth, we all come from a long line of insecurities, uncertainties, self questioning. It’s just a part of who we are. And it’s hard. The tough stuff is real, but so is the beauty and the joy. And no one does community right. No one has it all figured out. But therein lies the beauty. We are all fumbling through this together – doing the very best that we can and learning lessons of friendship and togetherness along the way.

Last week Showit hosted us in a beautiful home in Virginia. Showit is a company run by people who care about community. They invested in us, encouraged us and loved on us in ways that we didn’t even know we needed. But oh my goodness did we ever need it. We got to rest. We got to take time for long walks down tree-lined paths, meaningful conversations over glasses of wine and creative expression. It was wonderful, and I am so grateful for the example of community that Showit has set before us. I want to breathe into others like that. I want to fight for community and relationship even when it feels like I have nothing of substance to give.

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed at times – to convince yourself that if you can’t do it right you don’t want to do it at all. But there is no right. There is only try. And, at the end of the day, we’re all just walking each other home.
