Peachy Keen: WHAT IF Conference 2014

January 10, 2014

Last winter we did something that completely changed the trajectory of our year. We skipped all the big conferences and the big to-do’s. For the first time in a long time, we said “no thanks” to the comparisons, the trade shows, the cattle herding, the schmoozing and the small talk. It’s not that those things are bad, it’s just that we had gotten caught up in them… and they were getting to us. The industry game that we were choosing to play – that we were choosing to spend our heard-earned and precious time being a part of, started to make us question who we were – we were losing sight of why we chose to do this crazy-dream-chasing thing in the first place. Not to play games. Not to network and bigger ourselves, but to run wholeheartedly after a life filled to the brim with passion and joy.

So we made a different choice. We attended What If. It was, at best, a semi-conscious decision. We knew that we wanted more community and less crowds, more honesty and less posturing, more different and less sameness, more worldview and less bubble… but we had no idea what that meant. Signing up for What If was just a feeling in my gut, so I went with it. And, if I’m completely honest with you, going with my gut usually ends up in a halfway-rearranged living room or a painfully drastic haircut. But this time, it worked out. It was, in so many ways, exactly what our hearts needed. The conversations we had, the ways we were challenged, the perspective shift and the friendships made were life changing.

We are going back to What If this year, and are incredibly excited to get to contribute to the community in completely new ways. We are headed to Phoenix in February to speak at What If as Innovators, and to help run a little-freakin-awesome-something called the Test Kitchen. We can’t wait.

If you find yourself wondering if you “belong” in this industry, maybe the truth is that you just haven’t quite found your place – and maybe thats because you’ve been looking for it in the exact same spots as everyone else. There are still a few seats open for What-if this year, and we would absolutely love to see you there. If you have any questions at all or want to learn more about the amazing dreammunity that is What If (that’s a community of dreamers, for all of you who don’t speak Ashley), e-mail us or call us – we would love to talk to you about it.
